FRIYAY, YET AGAIN! this week has been difficult for me to choose the best videos of the week, even though the shortlist has increased (or perhaps because it increased?) with a total of 44 videos, 7 videos (19%) more than the previous week. the complete shortlist video list is available here: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSLNwXTNC/

i’m also adding some more notes about my scrolling/learning behaviors:

1.i can tell that my taste has improved (or has it? can you help me decide?).

2. guess what, i’m scrolling less! every time i open Tiktok, my mentality is no longer entertaining but “urg gear yourself up – you’re doing an assignment.” this is the first week in a long time that i’ve scrolled for less than an hour every day. while i could blame it on my crazy schedule and the variety of platforms (Reddit, Instagram) i’m using this week, i definitely think twice about opening the platform.

3. some exciting statistics: looking at this week’s summary, the video that made it to the shortlist with the fewest views is only 2540, which I believe caters explicitly to my interest (technology). there are only two videos with less than 10,000 views, and four with more than 10,000 but less than 50,000 views. twelve videos have more than one million views, which i believe is a signal of both algorithms and personal interest. it is worth noting that views are not a criteria that I consider when shortlisting the video.

Just to remind you, my top 3 videos of the week are based on these criteria:

(1) Emotion – videos that evoked the most emotion in me when watching them

(2) material – video with the best stuff that made me go “urg, I wish everyone knew about it”

(3) Production – video with the best production. this may act as a great reference for a future instructional design project.

i’m choosing 2 videos to be winners in content and 1 in production because, sadly, I COULD NOT find any winners in the emotion category. say, I’m still thinking about the Spirit Airlines video by this point and laughing so hard at it. however, none of these week’s videos have made that far. so without further ado, let’s get started:

CONTENT:

  • Creator: Empowa
  • Link to content: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSLNwVU4b/
  • What’s interesting? she introduces the idea of “creative technology” and a really cool project she created in which the sound changes whenever she moves her hands. this technology is SO COOL, and I think it might change how we teach sign language and other musical instruments—or even how we make new content altogether! it makes me sad that this video only had 5000+ views by the time i watched it after spending some more time scrolling through her feed and discovering how much i love her content. GO EMPOWA!

CONTENT:

  • Creator: Ruth
  • Link to content: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSLNwbYmK/
  • What’s interesting? i chose this because it prompted a thought and question that i had not previously thought out. i’m a big fan of Gen Z and Alpha, and one of the main reasons is their passion/ability to use technology, but this 2:30 minute video showcases a completely opposing viewpoint, with examples and logics that I found to make sense. the comment section also includes more references to help you navigate further research! this video also serves as a reminder to revisit one of my favorite prompts, “it appears that…, but is it truly like that…?”

Production:

  • Creator: VOX
  • Link to content: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSLNwWpbf/
  • What’s interesting? as VOX is a professional media service, their content is unquestionably of higher quality than standard. this video introduces a case study about how Chinatown effectively “leveraging” an earthquake to rebuild their branding strategy. i like the subtle motion and effective use of graphics (which is similar to the winner from last week). a few points on the contrast, and text readability could be improved, but that’s probably enough to win this week. it was difficult to choose between CajunKoiAcademy and this one, but his video is 16:9 in horizontal rather than 9:16 in vertical, so i went with this one.

Again, what are your thoughts? What is your favorite content? I can’t wait to hear your take on things! xD

I have to put a STRONG disclaimer that I’m an international student sooo – technically, I’m being able to study full-time. I know lots of our classmates are part-time learners hence don’t stretch yourself! Thank you so much for your kind words. Please let me know if you fill anything useful or fun on my blog, say, even a tiny tiny grammar mistake. xD
