just a quick announcement: I’ve decided to stop the 10 Minutes with Tiktok series in order to devote more time and energy to other blogs and also establish myself on other platforms! the Top 3 Weekly series is still continue!
______________
Last Sunday, I had an interview with a Ph.D student at FSU for her dissertation on how international students like me have used social media to adjust to life in the US, only came to realize that there used to be days that I used to use TEN different social media platforms in desperation for network and information to crowdsourcing information and solutions (Mergel & Desouza, 2013) for my upcoming journey at the States. the 10 platforms are:
- Quora
- Tiktok
- Telegram
- Youtube
honestly, now that i checked my phone, i’m also on two more platforms, Medium and Discord, but I do not use them during this time, probably because I did not find the right community on these platforms.
with that, i’m sharing how i navigated through the 10 platforms using the information characteristics framework (Osatuyi, 2013)!
Channel / Info Source | Primary | Secondary | Tertiary |
FSU Student’s Linkedin Post | FSU Linkedin Page | Nole Connections: FSU ISLT
Useful conversation on each sub-reddit | – | /r/instructionaldesign /r/gradadmissions /r/internationalstudent /r/gradschool /r/fsu
Quora | Useful answer on each question. | – | Search: FSU Search: Instructional Design |
– | Elearning Industry, VietPhD, VietReferral | Search: Instructional Design The Instructional Design Hangouts Instructional Design Instructional Design Newbie
FSU student’s Instagram Post | All FSU accounts that you can find | Search: FSU
Tiktok | FSU student’s Tiktok Video (spoiler alert: party & 18+) | – | Search: FSU |
FSU Professors’ Twitter Posts | – | Search: #FSU, #Instructionaldesign, #EdTech, #LearningDesign
– | – | Travel Packing Pin, US Travel Pin
Telegram | – | Deals’ Lair (to buy promotionals stuffs in the US) | – |
Youtube | Devlin Peck, Tim Slade, Ashton Herdon. | – | Search: Instructional Design, FSU, Travel Packing, US Study. |
my typical day of using these 10 platforms begins with Linkedin, where I check to see if anyone is accepting my connection and send new connections as it takes a while for individuals to accept my connection requests. i can definitely talk about Linkedin more for one interested – let me know in the comment!
then, after scrolling through Linkedin, I began browsing Facebook, Reddit and Quora at-the-same-time on my laptop because they typically contain long-form content and may or may not contain a large number of links that lead to other resources.
finally, I started with Twitter, Tiktok, Instagram, Telegram, Pinterest, and YouTube, which are all short-form content or video with audio, can be utilized during lunch or while traveling.
every single day since i received the admission letter from FSU, it’s all about #FSU, #ID, #LXD, #Packing, #USLife on these platforms.
and yet i still struggles with unexpected scenarios, which is part of the reasons why i started this on-going post about things i wish other international students may notice when studying in the US. i did share this content on Facebook & Quora as a payback and also receive further useful suggestions as well.
as of right now, i am indeed relieved to no longer live those days, and i have begun to receive support from my professors, my friends at the programs, and a few more seniors at Vietnam Learning Design Group, but this message is to a random stranger out there: you are not alone – find a space where you feel safe to speak up and ask, and you will definitely be heard!
