just a quick announcement: I’ve decided to stop the 10 Minutes with Tiktok series in order to devote more time and energy to other blogs and also establish myself on other platforms! the Top 3 Weekly series is still continue!
______________

Last Sunday, I had an interview with a Ph.D student at FSU for her dissertation on how international students like me have used social media to adjust to life in the US, only came to realize that there used to be days that I used to use TEN different social media platforms in desperation for network and information to crowdsourcing information and solutions (Mergel & Desouza, 2013) for my upcoming journey at the States. the 10 platforms are:

  1. Linkedin
  2. Reddit
  3. Quora
  4. Facebook
  5. Instagram
  6. Tiktok
  7. Twitter
  8. Pinterest
  9. Telegram
  10. Youtube

honestly, now that i checked my phone, i’m also on two more platforms, Medium and Discord, but I do not use them during this time, probably because I did not find the right community on these platforms.

with that, i’m sharing how i navigated through the 10 platforms using the information characteristics framework (Osatuyi, 2013)!

my typical day of using these 10 platforms begins with Linkedin, where I check to see if anyone is accepting my connection and send new connections as it takes a while for individuals to accept my connection requests. i can definitely talk about Linkedin more for one interested – let me know in the comment!

then, after scrolling through Linkedin, I began browsing Facebook, Reddit and Quora at-the-same-time on my laptop because they typically contain long-form content and may or may not contain a large number of links that lead to other resources.

finally, I started with Twitter, Tiktok, Instagram, Telegram, Pinterest, and YouTube, which are all short-form content or video with audio, can be utilized during lunch or while traveling.

every single day since i received the admission letter from FSU, it’s all about #FSU, #ID, #LXD, #Packing, #USLife on these platforms.

and yet i still struggles with unexpected scenarios, which is part of the reasons why i started this on-going post about things i wish other international students may notice when studying in the US. i did share this content on Facebook & Quora as a payback and also receive further useful suggestions as well.

as of right now, i am indeed relieved to no longer live those days, and i have begun to receive support from my professors, my friends at the programs, and a few more seniors at Vietnam Learning Design Group, but this message is to a random stranger out there: you are not alone – find a space where you feel safe to speak up and ask, and you will definitely be heard!

I’m really impressed that you can keep up with so many platforms. Just curious, do you go in to every platforms on a daily basis? On average how long do you spend using social media everyday?

Ever since starting this course, there have been a reduction in my personal usage of social media. I mostly use to keep track for the coursework nowadays. It can really get very tiring to use for both learning and personal usage. (Or maybe I’m not young anymore.)

Heyyy CY! I used to visit these platforms on a daily basis and analyze every piece of content on the platform as part of my workday. Such was my desperation, haha. Nevertheless, it’s not that much! I limit myself to 90 minutes at the most. Once you are familiar with these platforms, it may not take you long to navigate and locate the content you need.

And you are YOUNG! However, even I am growing fatigued of social media these days. I believe this is because we are scrolling with two brains – the EME6414 that try to analyze our behaviors or new use cases with these platforms, and the normal brain which usually do not think that much while scrolling lol.
